Brain Fog Isn't Always Forgetfulness


Most people think of brain fog as forgetting words, losing their train of thought, or walking into a room and wondering why they went there.

Those experiences are certainly real. But over the years, I've come to realize there's another type of brain fog that doesn't get talked about nearly enough—and I suspect many women have experienced it without ever knowing quite how to describe it.


It isn't really about memory - it's about capacity.

You can still carry on a conversation. You can still answer emails, make dinner, get through your workday, and take care of the things that need to be done. Then something requires real thought. You need to solve a complicated problem, make an important decision, organize several moving pieces, or think through something that isn't straightforward. Suddenly, it's as though your brain simply refuses.

Many people describe it as hitting a wall.

Others say their mind just shuts down.

For some, it comes with an unmistakable physical sensation—not a headache, and not exactly fatigue, but a deep heaviness or tightness across the forehead and behind the eyes. Thinking itself begins to feel like work. The overwhelming feeling isn't, "I don't know the answer." It's, "I can't deal with this right now."

That distinction matters.

Most of us assume something is wrong with our memory or that we're simply getting older. In reality, this particular experience may have much less to do with memory than with the amount of cognitive bandwidth your brain has available.


Your Brain May Be Conserving Resources

One of the things I find most fascinating about the brain is that it is constantly making decisions about where to spend its energy.

Planning, reasoning, weighing options, solving problems, and making sense of complex situations are some of the most metabolically demanding things your brain does. They require an enormous amount of coordination and energy.

When your nervous system has been living under chronic stress—whether that's emotional stress, illness, disrupted sleep, inflammation, or simply carrying too much for too long—your brain adapts.

Rather than allocating precious resources to higher-order thinking, it begins prioritizing the functions most important for getting you through the day.

From an evolutionary standpoint, this makes perfect sense. If your brain believes you're navigating an ongoing threat, it isn't especially interested in helping you think through next month's schedule or a difficult work project. Its first priority is survival.

Viewed through that lens, the experience becomes much easier to understand.

Your brain isn't necessarily failing.

It may be conserving resources.

That also explains why trying harder often makes things worse. Pushing through doesn't create more cognitive capacity any more than pressing harder on the gas pedal creates fuel in an empty tank.

Stress May Be Part of the Story—But Rarely the Entire Story

Stress can absolutely contribute to this pattern, but I would be cautious about assuming it's the only explanation.

This is where functional medicine has shaped the way I think.

The brain doesn't function in isolation. It depends on healthy thyroid function, stable blood sugar, restorative sleep, balanced hormones, adequate nutrients, low levels of inflammation, and a nervous system that isn't constantly operating in survival mode.

When one or several of those systems are struggling, the brain often feels it first.

That is why I rarely ask, "How do we get rid of the brain fog?"


A much more useful question is: "What is reducing the brain's available resources?"

For one person, the answer may be chronic stress.

For another, it may be thyroid dysfunction that has gone unrecognized despite "normal" labs. Someone else may be dealing with hormone changes, iron deficiency, poor sleep, inflammation, blood sugar instability, or several factors interacting at the same time.

The symptom is the same.

The reason behind it often isn't..


There's Good News.

One of the most encouraging aspects of this kind of brain fog is that it is often reversible.

As the underlying contributors begin to improve, many people notice that they can once again think through complex problems without becoming overwhelmed. Decision-making becomes easier. Reading requires less effort. Their mental stamina gradually returns.

The goal isn't simply to clear the fog.

The goal is to understand why it developed in the first place.

Our bodies are remarkably adaptive. What often feels like a malfunction is, in reality, an attempt to protect us under circumstances that have become too demanding.

When we understand what the brain is adapting to, we can begin giving it the support it has been asking for all along.
